A report from Jeff:
It was rainy and windy, but not too cold at first (although it was noticeably colder by the end of the game). The wind was from the north, so moving the disc downfield southward wasn't too hard, but moving it upfield against the wind was very challenging. The Geezers started strong by scoring the first two points, then basically traded points and during the first half. We played several variations of a zone defense, relying on the wind to help us thwart the students' eagerness to throw long. That strategy worked well, and we went into halftime up 8-6.
It got a little colder and windier in the second half, and we had more difficulty playing an effective zone. The wind and rain also made the disc harder to hold onto, leading to a couple of critical drops by the Geezers, In addition, several of the students stepped up offensively, making short cuts through the middle and working the disc past our zone like we were standing still (which we mostly were!). Ben Martin in particular made some spectacular diving saves on offense and layout dives on defense, thwarting several imminent Geezer scores. We went up 10-7 and felt like if we could score on the next possession, we could break the students' spirit and cruise to victory. We had several chances to score downwind, getting the disc within a few yards of the goal line at least twice, but were unable to get a good pass around the students' defense. I think two different times after those turnovers the students were able to move the disc upwind through our (by then nonexistent) defense and score. That gave them the confidence they needed to clamp down on defense, come back and tie the game at 13-all, and then score the next two points to win 15-13.
Despite the conditions, a few spectators showed up.
One couple had the foresight to bring this tent. This was much-appreciated as it kept everyone's stuff (mostly) dry.
Green breaks towards an open field.
Getting good separation from her defender.
Oh-no! The disc is out of reach.
But she comes up smiles (which is always nice to see).
A layout catch prevents a turnover.
If you look closely, you can see the rain against the black pants.
"Super" effort like this helped secure a win.
Trying to stay dry.
The wet disc and cold fingers converted otherwise routine catches, into turnovers.
And sometimes, good, old-fashioned defense caused turnovers.
Must...reach...the...disc.
Some players are more "comitted" than others. The plastic bag is protecting a plastic cast which is protecting an injured ankle. She definitely gets my vote for hardcore Ultimate player of the month.
Nice force by gray.
A disc is awarded for the "Play of the Game".
"Baby Geezer" T-shirts were also given to the graduating seniors.
Victors!
For those of you not counting, after years of winning, the Geezers have been defeated twice in a row. Have the Geezers finally met their match or are they just over-the-hill?
We had a cookout after the game. (Although, technically, I think it was a 'cook-in'.)
Hamburgers were prepared inside and grilled "outside" (in a garage). Thanks for helping out, guys.
The shoes socialized in the kitchen while the people found their own spots around the house.
Chow-time!
